"Iraklis" Gymnastics Club of Thessaloniki
The "Iraklis" Gymnastics Club of Thessaloniki was founded in 1908 and is one of the most historic and active sports clubs in Greece. Its name comes from the mythological hero Heracles, while its colors, light blue and white, represent national identity and the passion of its members for the liberation of Thessaloniki from the Ottoman Empire. It is also the oldest active sports club in Thessaloniki and the region of Macedonia, with dozens of achievements in various sports, especially football, basketball, volleyball, and water polo. Iraklis' history begins in 1899, with the founding of the Philomouson Society, originally a club focused on literature and music. In 1903, the members decided to incorporate sports into their activities, establishing swimming and cycling departments, with football quickly becoming particularly popular among the younger members. The year 1908 marks a key moment in Iraklis’ story, as the club collaborated with the team "Olympia", leading to the creation of the "Iraklis" Ottoman Greek Club of Thessaloniki. Following the liberation of Thessaloniki in 1912, the club was renamed to "Iraklis" Gymnastics Club of Thessaloniki. The football department was the first to be established and achieved success early on. Despite the difficulties it faced throughout the 20th century, Iraklis managed to survive and expand its sports activities, becoming an integral part of the history and culture of Thessaloniki. Many great athletes and prominent figures have worn the club’s jersey bearing the demigod Heracles on the chest.
