Saint Anastasia Farmakolytria of Rhodes
Description
The holy church of Saint Anastasia Farmakolytria is located in the district (“marasi”) of Agia Anastasia at a distance of about 700m. south from the gate of Agios Ioannis (Red Gate) of the medieval city of Rhodes. It was built before 1809 in the architectural style of the cruciform basilica, with a more recent addition of a narthex and a gynaiconite (lady chapel). The church boasts a remarkable iconostasis with an icon of Saint Anastasia from 1809 and an icon of the Virgin Mary from 1677, perhaps from an earlier church. It has an exceptionally well-designed belfry and next to it a Turkish marble fountain from 1904. It celebrates on December 22, where a festive Divine Liturgy with the participation of the Metropolitan is celebrated and a litany of the miraculous icon of Saint Anastasia is carried out. Many parishioners and believers from every part of the island come to honor the memory of the Saint. A short distance from the church is the holy church of the Entry of the Virgin to the Temple (Metropolitan Church). Also characteristic are the mansions located in the alleys of the district with characteristic elements of neoclassical architecture that exude the glamor of a bygone glorious era.
