Entry of the Virgin to the Temple, Neochori
Description
The holy church of the Entry of the Virgin to the Temple in the area of Neohori is one of the most important pilgrimages of the city of Rhodes. It is celebrated on November 21st and also on November 14th, the day of commemoration of the Patron Saint of the city of Rhodes, Saint Konstantinos of Hydra. It is a single-nave cruciform basilica with later additions (1829-1836), a wood-carved iconostasis (1801) and excellent despotic (central iconostasis) icons painted in a Nazarene painting maniere. According to tradition, the holy body of the Saint was transferred here after he was hanged. Today, it is displayed for veneration in an elaborate larnax-type marble altar on the south wall of the narthex of the church. The church also keeps a part of the holy relic of the saint, the ulna, in a special arm-shaped reliquary that is put on display for the public to worship on the day of the Saint’s celebration. In memory of the Saint, a Divine Liturgy with the participation of the Metropolitan and a majestic procession take place in the city of Rhodes with the accompaniment of a philharmonic and a honorary military regiment. At a short distance from the church of the Entry of the Virgin to the Temple we find the Byzantine church of Archangel Michael. To the south we find the Amaranteios School, one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings on the island and one of the most historical schools of the city of Rhodes. Further north we see the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes – the Aquarium, a historic building with a special architecture that houses interesting specimens of Mediterranean marine fauna and promotes research and education.
