Title

Saint Anastasia the Roman, Gennadi

Description

The holy church of Saint Anastasia the Roman is located in the seaside area of Gennadi, within the cemetery area, and it is found 61 kilometres from the city of Rhodes. It is a single-space barrel-vaulted church from the Hospitaller period (15th century) with a cruciform porch, which was built on the site of an early Christian Basilica, as evidenced by the number of architectural fragments that are scattered in the area, while others have been built into the church. Inside the church we observe frescoes from two pictorial layers dating from the 15th and early 19th centuries. It also has an excellent iconostasis completed before 1751 by Cretan craftsmen. The coat of arms of the Great Magister Orsini (1467-1476) and two plaques carrying reliefs of crosses and the dates 1837 and 1871 are all embedded in the porch. Saint Anastasia the Roman is the patron saint of the village and celebrates on October 29. On the eve, a festive vespers is held and on the day of the Saint’s celebration, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated with the participation of the Metropolitan. At a close distance to the northwest (about 8 km.), we find the village of Asklipieio with the Holy Church of the Dormition (11th century) and a little further east, at a distance of 21 kilometres, the traditional village of Lindos.
