Title

Entry of the Virgin to the Temple, Metropolitan Church

Description

The Metropolitan Church of the city of Rhodes is dedicated to the Entry of the Virgin to the temple and it is located at a distance of 600 metres from the gate of Saint Ioannis (Red Gate) of the Medieval city to the southeast. It was built in 1750 on the site of an older church and over time it acquired its current form. During the Turkish rule, the church was the core of the “Marasi” district of the Metropolis. It has an elaborate wood-carved iconostasis in Ottoman Baroque style and several ecclesiastical artefacts of great value. Repair and restoration work has recently been carried out inside the church. The church celebrates on November 21. On the day of the celebration, a Divine Liturgy with the participation of Metropolitans is held and after its end, an impressive procession takes place with the presence of representatives of the armed forces, the local political authorities and a large number of faithful believers from the whole island. A short distance from the church we find some of the neoclassical buildings of the city of Rhodes, the Central Municipal School and the Kazoulio Girls’ School of Rhodes.
