Church of the Archangels, Archangelos
Description
The holy church of Archangel Michael is located in the center of the old village of Archangelos at a distance of 30 kilometres from the city of Rhodes. It is the parish church of the town of Archangelos, which was named after the church. The current church was built in 1845 according to a founding inscription on the site of an older church also dedicated to Archangel Michael. It is a three-aisled cruciform basilica. It has an excellent wood-carved iconostasis (1856-1859), with notable portable icons from the 19th century, a pebbled floor from 1885 in the narthex and a bell tower built before 1914. The two oversized icons of Archangel Michael stand out among its religious artefacts. The church celebrates on November 8 and Archangel Michael is the patron saint of the area. On the day of the feast, after the Divine Liturgy with the participation of the Metropolitan, a litany of the icon of the Archangel takes place with the accompaniment of the philharmonic and the whole local community. Not far from the church to the east, on the hill, the Archangelos Castle is located, with the chapel of Saint George (15th century). In the town premises around the church, we find the churches of Archangel Gabriel (16th – 17th century) in the Patitiri location, the church of the Dormition of the Virgin, the church of Saint Antonios and Saint Ioannis (15th century) near the former Primary School which is an example of Italian architecture.
