Dormition of the Virgin, Salakos
Description
The church of the Dormition of the Virgin in Salakos is the cemetery church of the area and it is located 39 kilometres from the city of Rhodes. It was probably built in the 15th century and it is one of the three churches belonging to the architectural type of the Rhodian tetraconch domed churches. Currently, only some fragments of its original frescoes survive. The holy church celebrates on the 15th of August and on the eve of its celebration there is a procession of the Epitaph and a litany of the icon of the Dormition of the Virgin with the participation of numerous locals and visitors. It is situated in the wider area of the verdant Salakos with the well-known water springs, on the hill of Prophet Elias, where the monastery under the same name is found, as well as the Byzantine churches of Saint Georgios and Saint Nikolaos. Furthermore, it is near is the Nymph Valley and the source of the Silver River [Argiros Potamos]. A little further north lies also the archaeological site and the harbour of Kamiros.
