Transfiguration of the Saviour, Maritsa
Description
The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior (17th century) is located on the southeast of the Maritsa pine forest and it is 17 kilometres from the city of Rhodes. It celebrates on August 6th, where a great festival is held on the eve of the feast day. The church is single-naved, in the type of a free cross with a blind dome, and despite the fact that it has been renovated, fragments of its pictorial decoration, as well as a dedicatory venerating inscription from 1689, have survived to this day. Next to the church are the cells of the monks. The area has a wonderful view and the churchyard is suitable for relaxation. A short distance from the monastery we find the village of Maritsa, which is a popular destination for those who wish to enjoy the traditional cuisine of Rhodes. To the northwest is the “Diagoras” International Rhodes Airport. To the south and at a distance of less than 1 kilometre, the Valley of the Butterflies and the village of Psinthos are located.
