Transfiguration of the Saviour, Fanes
Description
The chapel dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior is located within the geographical boundaries of the picturesque village of Fanes, on the provincial road Ialysos-Kattavia. It is located 26 kilometres from the city of Rhodes. The church is a small single-nave barrel-vaulted building, inside which the miraculous icon of the Transfiguration of the Savior is held. It celebrates on the 6th of August, so a festival is held on the eve of the celebration. Every year pilgrims from the whole island flock to the celebration. The traditional village settlement of Fanes is nearby, which boasts a history since the year 2000 B.C. to which the English traveler and archaeologist C. Newton also makes references. The village is famous for its colorful plastered outhouses, its picturesque harbor and its beach which offers water sports in the summer. At the beginning of autumn in Fanes, a vine festival takes place in the old factory of C.A.I.R. which has been turned into an Agricultural Heritage Experience Center. A few kilometers to the south we find the archaeological site of Ancient Kameiros and its corresponding harbour.
