Title
Saint Panteleimon, Sianna
Description
The holy church of Saint Panteleimon (1892) is located in the square of the mountainous village of Sianna on the western side of the island and celebrates on July 27. It is located about 70 kilometres from the city of Rhodes. The church is built in the cross-in-square domed architectural type with a sixteen-sided dome and cruciform vault, and two five-story bell towers integrated in its western facade. It is painted in its entirety, and it has a wood-carved and painted iconostasis. Notably, a fragment of the holy relics and the miraculous icon of Saint Panteleimon (1779) are kept in it. Adjacent to the western side of the church we find the older church of Saint Panteleimon (15th century), which is currently used as a museum and houses relics dating back to 1680. In the square in front of the church, festive events are held that attract a large number of local and visiting faithful pilgrims, who want to thank the Saint for blessings he has granted them. In addition, every year in the middle of summer, in the same place, the celebration of “Souma” and “Honey” takes place. In the same area there are several countryside chapels, while the archaeological site of Kymisala and the settlement of Monolithos are located in close proximity.
