Title

Saint Fanourios Old Town of Rhodes

Description

The parish church of Saint Fanourios (13th century) is located within the walls of the medieval city of Rhodes and at a distance of only 100 meters from the gate of Saint Athanasios. During the 14th century, an icon was found near the church with scenes of martyrdom of the Saint and with the inscription "Saint Fanourios", which is why the church was attributed to Saint Fanourios and celebrates yearly the day of the discovery of his icon. He is considered the Patron Saint of the island of Rhodes. The church is built at a lower level from the ground in the free-cross domed type with a later narthex, of rough construction, at its western edge. It is painted in its entirety (13th-15th century AD) and it is a typical example of a surviving church with a complete pictorial program within the city of Rhodes. Also characteristic is the depiction of the donor-founder monks of the church in a paradisiacal landscape on the southern wall within a blind apse (arkosolium). It is currently one of the most important pilgrimage sites for the local community as well as for the island's visitors. The popular traditional custom of promised offering - tama of the pie of Saint Fanourios (fanouropita) is characteristic.
